Surah Al-Fatiha

Assalaam O Alaykum
  • Recited at every prayer, at least 17 times a day with farz alone.
  • 12-13 names for the surah, including “the opening” because it’s the opening surah.
  • Other important names: (1) As-Sabah-ul-Mathani referring to the 7 verses (2) Um-ul-Quran or the mother of the Quran (3) Ash-Shafiyah or the curer
  • Bismillah Rehman Rahim: Different opinion whether it’s part of the Surah or whether it is a means open a new Surah
  • Refers to 2 names of Allah SWT as the Most Beneficent and Most Merciful
  • Allah SWT is the lord of this and all the worlds (different opinions on whether there’s 17 000 or 40 000 worlds)

Bismilah Hir-Rehman Nir-Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Alhamdollilah Rabbil Alameen
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds

Ar-Rahmaan Nir-Rahim
The Beneficent, the Merciful

Malik Qiyowmideen
Master of the Day of Judgement

Iya-Kana Budo Wa Iya-Kanus Ta-een
Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help

Ih Dinus Siratul Mustakeem
Keep us on the right path

Siratul Ladeena Un-umta Alaiyhim Ghairul Mukdu Bee Alaiyhim Wa LaDaleen
The path of those upon who Thou has bestowed favors. Not (the path) of those upon whom Thy wrath is brought down, nor of those who go astray

 

Ar-Rehman Rahim: Mentioning the virtues of Allah SWT

  • We are only the temporary owners of this world, Allah SWT is the only master of this world and the day of judgement
  • We therefore seek to worship, submit and seek guidance from Allah SWT
  • We seek guidance to remain on the correct path, also we must remember to show the right etiquette and behaviour when seeking ‘dua’ from Allah SWT
  • Sirat-al Mustaqin: Path of the righteous prophets. We should seek to remain truthful. 4 categories of following the straight path.
  • At the same time, we don’t want to follow the wrong paths and be misled by the incorrect conceptions (Jews and Christians)
  • Prayers incomplete without Surah Al-Fatiha
  • Different means and methods of prayer (e.g. not reciting at the same time when the leader is reciting)
  • Each method has its merits, and there is no way to say that any method is wrong. It’s just different ways. Most important thing is the intention
